Kati Kangas,

Kati's visit to Biomimicry Granada

Kati Kangas visited Rebecca Laine, a graphic design student, who is doing their internship at Granada.

The teachers of Brahe visited Granada, Spain for one week, to familiarize themselves with the MEP program. While the others followed the offered program, I visited Rebecca Laine, a graphic design student, who is doing their internship at Granada. Rebecca's internship is at Biomimicry, a company that creates practical and sustainable solutions by incorporating knowledge of nature into our environment. They do projects, hold lectures and train people in natural solutions. The company also works closely with its customers, creating nature-like solutions for their own and their client's projects. Because of confidentiality, I didn't photograph the company's premises to keep the customers' projects a secret.

In the company, Rebecca does graphic design work for both the client and the company itself. The work includes the preparation of forms, Illustrations for the company's own projects, as well as posters and other marketing materials for the company's and the customer's own use.

During the visit, I talked with Rebecca's employer, Theresa Millard, about Rebecca's role in the workplace. So far, Rebecca has been an effective and valued part of the work environment because the company is small, and they don't have a designated graphic designer. Theresa is a sustainability expert who also works in manufacturing and product development and sustainability. At the office, I also met Matt Nieman, who is a physics expert in the company, and biologist Chris Gauthier.

During the visit I went through Rebecca's work. We discussed the upcoming courses she will take at the workplace and evaluated the work she had already completed. Rebecca has gotten off to a great start in her job and enjoys the work environment and the work itself.

Rebecca has found the internship in Granada, Spain, on her own initiative. Rebecca revealed that her friend is Theresa's daughter, which opened the door for her to ask for an internship at Theresa's company. Theresa was a very nice person who was genuinely interested in Rebecca's studies. She asked questions about Rebecca's courses and was genuinely willing to offer Rebeca graphic design tasks according to the courses she's working towards.

I believe that Rebecca will enjoy her internship, especially since Rebecca revealed that she wants to study for a whole year as an exchange student! With this attitude, it's certainly possible and her work samples speak for themselves! I wish her the best of luck and joy for her work!
